Movie Review Grown Ups (2010) Essay Example
Movie Review: Grown Ups (2010) Essay As with other Adam Sandler starrers, the 2010 released Grown Ups too excels in that special brand of American humor. Sandler and his co-stars, including Kevin James, David Spade, Rob Schneider and Chris Rock were first part of a successful basketball team in school. The ocassion of the funeral of their coach brings them together after many years and the old friends decide to stay in a cottage to reminisce their old days. With each of the five having moved into different careers and all being married now, they exchange moments of nostalgia as well as regrets about the decisions they have taken in their lives. As the narrative moves further, some of them start showing their unique quirks and idiosyncracies that had stayed with them since school days. Indeed some of the apparently juvenile behavior of their school days seemed to have not left them completely as they had integrated into their adult personalities. It is for this reason that the movie title Grown Ups is an ironic lab elling of the theme. One would expect many funny situations and responses when adults behave like juveniles. But making such as theme cover the entire length of the film is an arduous undertaking on part of the director and script writers. The low-brow and at times slapstick variety of humor might appeal to a certain audience, but is not sufficient to sustain a film throughout. For example, the scene where the five friends play ââ¬ËArrow Rouletteââ¬â¢, where an arrow is fired into the air and the last to run away is declared the winner. There is a certain comic feel to see middle-aged participants in a childrenââ¬â¢s game. But after a while such comedy loses its novelty and effect. The sexual innuendoes, drunken behavior, barbeques and games all set up interesting situations in which the characters play out their quirky personalities to full effect. Herein lies the drawback of the film as well, for the quirky, adolescent behavior of the five friends can at times appear to be too artificial and conjured up to be appreciated. Believed to have been inspired by the classic comedy flick The Big Chill, one can see that Grown Ups does not match up to the quality of the former. As far as the weakness of the movie goes, the script writing team of Fred Wolf and Adam Sandler have wasted much of the potential offered by the plot. The previous major buddy-comedy film The Hangover is a classic case in point, where the full potential of the plot was realized on screen. But die-hard fans of Adam Sandler, who have acquired a taste for his unique brand of situational humor would also like this movie. Having a star-cast has helped the overall quality of the film. At places where the script fails, it is the acting talent and experience of the actors that pull the narrative through. The presence of Salma Hayek, Maria Bello and Maya Rudolph along with Madison Riley and Jamie Chung certainly brings glitz and glamor on screen. The background score by Rupert Gregson-Williams is relatively low-key as would be expected of films in the genre. In sum, Grown Ups is a typical Adam Sandler movie with many hilarious comic situations. It is also a well-packaged movie with a proven star cast and enough glamor quotient to make it a perfect weekend watch. Indeed, it is worth a watch at least once. Epiphany Meaning and Examples
Epiphany Meaning and Examples Anà Epiphany is a term in literary criticism for a sudden realization, a flash of recognition, in which someone or something is seen in a new light. In Stephen Hero (1904), Irish author James Joyce used the term epiphany to describe the moment when the soul of the commonest object . . . seems to us radiant. The object achieves it epiphany. Novelist Joseph Conrad described epiphany as one of those rare moments of awakening in which everything [occurs] in a flash. Epiphanies may be evoked in works of nonfiction as well as in short stories and novels. The word epiphany comes from the Greek for a manifestation or showing forth. In Christian churches, the feast following the twelve days of Christmas (January 6) is called Epiphany because it celebrates the appearance of divinity (the Christ child) to the Wise Men. Examples of Literary Epiphanies Epiphanies are a common storytelling device because part of what makes a good story is a character who grows and changes. A sudden realization can signify a turning point for a character when they finally understand something that the story has been trying to teach them all along. It is often used well at the end of mystery novels when the saluteth finally receives the last clue that makes all the pieces of the puzzle make sense. A good novelist can often lead the readers to such epiphanies along with their characters.à Epiphany in the Short Story "Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield In the story of the same name Miss ââ¬â¹B rill discovers such annihilation when her own identity as onlooker and imagined choreographer to the rest of her small world crumbles in the reality of loneliness. The imagined conversations she has with other people become, when overheard in reality, the onset of her destruction. A young couple on her park bench- the hero and the heroine of Miss Brills own fictive drama, just arrived from his fathers yacht . . . - are transformed by reality into two young people who cannot accept the aging woman who sits near them. The boy refers to her as that stupid old thing at the end of the bench and openly expresses the very question that Miss Brill has been trying so desperately to avoid through her Sunday charades in the park: Why does she come here at allwho wants her? Miss Brills epiphany forces her to forgo the usual slice of honeycake at the bakers on her way home, and home, like life, has changed. It is now a little dark room . . . like a cup board. Both life and home have become suffocating. Miss Brills loneliness is forced upon her in one transformative moment of acknowledgment of reality. (Karla Alwes, Katherine Mansfield. Modern British Women Writers: An A-to-Z Guide, ed. by Vicki K. Janik and Del Ivan Janik. Greenwood, 2002) Harry (Rabbit) Angstrom's Epiphany in Rabbit, Run They reach the tee, a platform of turf beside a hunchbacked fruit tree offering fists of taut ivory-colored buds. Let me go first, Rabbit says. Til you calm down. His heart is hushed, held in mid-beat, by anger. He doesnt care about anything except getting out of this tangle. He wants it to rain. In avoiding looking at Eccles he looks at the ball, which sits high on the tee and already seems free of the ground. Very simply he brings the clubhead around his shoulder into it. The sound has a hollowness, a singleness he hasnt heard before. His arms force his head up and his ball is hung way out, lunarly pale against the beautiful black blue of storm clouds, his grandfathers color stretched dense across the north. It recedes along a line straight as a ruler-edge. Stricken; sphere, star, speck. It hesitates, and Rabbit thinks it will die, but hes fooled, for the ball makes its hesitation the ground of a final leap: with a kind of visible sob takes a last bite of space before vanishing in falling. Thats it! he cries and, turning to Eccles with a grin of aggrandizement, repeats, Thats it. (John Updike, Rabbit, Run. Alfred A. Knopf, 1960) The passage quoted from the first of John Updikes Rabbit novels describes an action in a contest, but it is the intensity of the moment, not its consequences, that [is] important (we never discover whether the hero won that particular hole). . . .In epiphanies, prose fiction comes closest to the verbal intensity of lyric poetry (most modern lyrics are in fact nothing but epiphanies); so epiphanic description is likely to be rich in figures of speech and sound. Updike is a writer prodigally gifted with the power of metaphoric speech. . . . When Rabbit turns to Eccles and cries triumphantly, Thats it! he is answering the ministers question about what is lacking in his marriage. . . . Perhaps in Rabbits cry of Thats it! we also hear an echo of the writers justifiable satisfaction at having revealed, through language, the radiant soul of a well-struck tee shot. (David Lodge, The Art of Fiction. Viking, 1993) Critical Observations on Epiphany It is a literaryà critics job to analyze and discuss the ways authors use epiphanies in novels.à The critics function is to find ways of recognizing and judging the epiphanies of literature which, like those of life itself (Joyce borrowed his use of the term epiphany directly from theology), are partial disclosures or revelations, or spiritual matches struck unexpectedly in the dark. (Colin Falck, Myth, Truth, and Literature: Towards a True Post-Modernism, 2nd ed. Cambridge Univ. Press, 1994) The definition Joyce gave of epiphany in Stephen Hero depends on a familiar world of objects of use- a clock one passes every day. The epiphany restores the clock to itself in one act of seeing, of experiencing it for the first time. (Monroe Engel, Uses of Literature. Harvard University Press, 1973)

How to Use the STDEV.S Function in Excel
How to Use the STDEV.S Function in Excel The standard deviation is a descriptive statistic that tells us about the dispersion- or spread- of a set of data. Just like using many other formulas in statistics, the calculation of a standard deviation is a fairly tedious process to do by hand. Fortunately, statistical software speeds up this calculation considerably. Statistical Software There are many software packages that do statistical calculations, but one of the most readily accessible programs is Microsoft Excel. Although we could use a step-by-step process using the formula for a standard deviation for our calculation, it is possible to complete this calculation using one Excel function. Populations and Samples Before moving on to the specific commands used to calculate a standard deviation, it is important to distinguish between a population and a sample. A population is the set of every individual being studied. A sample is a subset of a population. The difference between these two concepts means the difference in how a standard deviation is calculated. Standard Deviation in Excel To use Excel to determine the sample standard deviation of a set of quantitative data, type these numbers into a group of adjacent cells in a spreadsheet. In an empty cell type what is in the quotation marks STDEV.S(à ââ¬â¹Following this type the location of the cells where the data is and then close the parentheses with ââ¬â¹). This can alternatively be done by use of the following procedure. If our data is located in cells A2 to A10, then (omitting the quotation marks) STDEV.S(A2:A10) will obtain the sample standard deviation of the entries in cells A2 to A10. Rather than typing the location of the cells where our data is located, we can use a different method. This involves typing the first half of the formula STDEV.S(, and clicking on the first cell where the data is located. A colored box will appear around the cell that we have selected. We then drag the mouse until we have selected all of the cells that contain our data. We finish this by closing the parentheses. Cautions There a few cautions that must be made in using Excel for this calculation. We need to make sure that we do not mix up out functions. The Excel formula STDEV.S closely resembles STDEV.P. The former is typically the necessary formula for our calculations, as it is used when our data is a sample from a population. In the event that our data constitutes the entire population being studied, then we would want to use STDEV.P. Another thing that we must be careful about concerns the number of data values. Excel is limited by the number of values that can be entered into the standard deviation function. All of the cells that we use for our calculation must be numerical. We must be sure that error cells and cells with text in them are not entered into the standard deviation formula.

Design System and Security Control Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words
Design System and Security Control - Essay Example This includes user errors, malicious and non-malicious attacks, accidents as well as external attack from hackers, who try to gain access to the system and disrupt the various system operations hence rendering it useless, or data alteration or even data loss. There are a number of system security and control requirements that are required for the implementation of the ACA Technology. The system will need protection in terms of the following aspects of data. The system should ensure confidentiality. This implies that the system should hold information that requires its protection from any unauthorized disclosures. This includes personal information as well as business proprietary information. Authentication Secondly, authentication is another important aspect of any given system. This is defined as the act of establishing the identity of a given user as well as the host being used. The first objective of authentication is usually first to establish that the given person and/ or system which is attempting to gain access to the system has the permission to do so. The second objective is usually the gathering of the information detailing the way the particular user is gaining access to the system. Smart cards, bank cards, computer chips are used to identify the identity of a given person. Some of the devices require the user to also supply a password or personal identification number (PIN) to verify their identity. The third method is by use of Biometric identification. This method uses the Biometric science that identifies a given person based on their physical characteristics. This includes voice recognition, palm, thumbprint identification as well as retinal scan. Authorization Thirdly is the authorization which is another vital aspect of system control. This is defined as the act of determining the access level that a particular user has to behavior and data. Under this aspect of system control, effective approaches to authorization need to be first established . A number of questions need to be addressed i.e. ââ¬Å"What shall we control access to?â⬠As we know itââ¬â¢s possible to implement secure access to both data and functionality for example access to monthly sales figures and the ability to fire a given employee respectively. While this is being done a number of factors need to be checked to ensure that the implementation is cost effective and conforms to the performance constraints. The second question that arises is ââ¬Å"what rules shall be applicable?â⬠to be in a position to answer this question effectively, the stakeholders' requirements need to be factored in and included should be other security factors which the stakeholders may not be aware of. These factors will include; the connection type, update access, the time of the day, the existence, privileges level, global permissions etc.

The advantages of teaching Citzenship as a discrete subject over Essay
The advantages of teaching Citzenship as a discrete subject over teaching it through other subject areas of the curriculum - Essay Example ship, exclusively, is both a discrete subject and also a culture - which is a way of living with its own distinct set of values, attitudes and nature which supports continuous lifelong learning. Since citizenship education is so completely new to the curriculum in most schools, the timetable contexts in which it takes place are likely to vary quite considerably. ââ¬ËMany schools are recognizing the wider benefits of citizenship and offer special themed days with a collapsed timetable and specialist speakers.à In some schools, citizenship may be part of, and an extension to, existing programme of Pastoral, Social and Health Education (PSHE). In others there may be timetable slots quite explicitly labelled Citizenship. In yet others, the requirements of the citizenship curriculum may be addressed within a framework of Humanities teaching. Still other schools may decide to address citizenship in a totally embedded cross-curricular way, identifying specific elements of the citizenship curriculum to be included in individual subject departmentsââ¬â¢ schemes of work. Some schools are taking the opportunity to reflect on their organisation and are embracing a citizenship ethos in which citizenship concepts and knowledge are developed through active participation and greater learner responsibility. These schools have effective schools councils, student consultation and representation, shadowing, specialist student training, peer work, whole school special focus days, local and national student elections, involvement with other schools and links with the wider community including their local councilors and MP. Trainees on the course are encouraged to see themselves, first and foremost, as citizenship teachers capable of straddling most, if not all, of the fields of knowledge and pedagogical approaches to which reference has been made. Realistically, and in order to build a viable personal teaching timetable while on school experience, there may be a need to undertake

Disparity Between Dunce and Genius in Tooles A Confederacy of Dunces E
Disparity Betweenà Dunce andà Genius in Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces à "When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him." -Jonathan Swift à à In Swift's words, there is a potential for the existence of a genius, indicated by the group of dunces acting in opposition. In A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, Ignatius J. Reilly plays both parts of the genius and the dunce. As Ignatius plays both parts, the Wheel of Fortuna determines the path of events in his life; although he is not aware of it, Fortuna's spin is also determined by his actions. Just as the wheel is circular, so are the events in his life. Ignatius moves through his own bildingsroman, showing qualities of a genius in his words and qualities of a dunce in his actions at the Night of Joy, Levy Pants, Paradise Vendors, and (to complete the circle) again at the Night of Joy. At the opening of the novel, Ignatius and his mother escape the clutches of the police by entering a nearby bar, the Night of Joy. Ignatius and his mother meet Darlene and the bartender in the sudden visit. As he speaks to Darlene, Ignatius' stories are unimportant but he tells them in an elevated fashion. Although the content may be trivial, Ignatius uses words that make the stories sound significant. For example, in his story about vomiting on his trip in a Greyhound Scenicruiser, he says, "that was the only time I had ever been out of New Orleans in my life. I think that perhaps it was the lack of a center of orientation that might have upset me"(10). Ignatius continues to speak in an educated style to the bartender, even though his message is condescending. Ignatius tells him that, "it is your duty to sile... ... he is labeled a "dunce." He does finally break free from the circles of Fortuna when he runs away to New York with Myrna Minkoff, but his "freedom" is only circumscribed by a new location. The reader is left to believe that Ignatius will create more circles and spins in New York. In Confederacy of Dunces, Toole emphasizes the disparity between the "bodily" dunce and the "intellectual" genius to underscore the impossibility of separating the mental and physical capacities of his characters. Advanced When Live in Big Cities
ADVANCED WHEN LIVE IN BIG CITIES Big cities are often more exciting and they also have a quicker pace. Living in large cities means that you have to become more active so that you can adapt to a variety of situations. Another aspect of the exciting of city life is the variety of cultural activities available. Big cities are cultural centers where there are social activies, sports events, concerts, trade shows, fashion shows, ectâ⬠¦In big cities, there are a lot of places for you to relax at weekends and go on vacatons such as theatres, cinemas, parks and zoos, and centers of recreation. Big cities are aslo economical centers with a lot of big companies, both national and international. It means that you have many chances to get a good job. These are rare in small towns or the countryside. In addition, there are many facilities for our life and health care. For example, you can find plenty of shops and supermarkets around places where you are living. Therefore, you can buy everyday neccessities quickly. Furthermore, people concern more about their health and safety than other things in their lifes. In big cities, medical facilities and emergency services are easily accessibe than in the countryside. Big cities also have convinient transportation and utility systems. They also offer faster internet connections. These all make our life easier. To summazire, I think that living in big cities is much better than living in the countryside because of advanced facilities and social activities.
